Extinction Rebellion  protesters mounted a blockade of five of the main bridges in the capital today ,Southwark, Blackfriars, Waterloo,Westminster and Lambeth bridges were closed to traffic for much of the day as organisers estimate that up to six thousand demonstrators turned out to highlight the dangers facing our planet from climate change and pollution. This follows several actions over the past week including Wednesday’s incident where protesters super-glued themselves to the gates of Downing Street and a group who chained themselves together on the pavement which caused a human blockade of the UKs energy department.

Latest reports suggest that all but one bridge (Westminster) are now open to the public, several protesters have been arrested on public order charges, which takes the number now to 47 since the beginning of the week. The police statement said “The protest had caused significant traffic disruption and emergency service vehicles are currently being hampered from getting across London”.
